Steve McLean is Head of Agriculture & Fisheries Sourcing for the food business of Marks & Spencer.
He joined M&S in 2008 as Agriculture Manager for red meat and dairy supply chains and was appointed Head of Agriculture & Fisheries in 2012. In 2017, Steve added raw material supplies across the M&S food business to his responsibilities. Prior to joining M&S, Steve was Chief Executive of the British Texel Sheep Society, a manager with the ANM Lamb Marketing group, and a development officer with the Highlands & Islands Sheep Health Society.
He is currently responsible for raw material sourcing across the M&S food business globally. Part of Steve’s responsibilities include establishing and delivering sustainable agriculture and fish programmes and leading the development of global sourcing strategies for livestock and fish proteins encompassing more than 12,000 individual farming & fishing businesses around the world.
Steve is also a trustee of the Princes Countryside Fund and a Chartered Scientist. He is passionate about sustainable agriculture and shares SAI Platform’s definition that sustainable agriculture is about the efficient production of safe, high quality agricultural products, in a way that protects and improves the natural environment, the social and economic conditions of farmers, their employees and local communities, and safeguards the health and welfare of all farmed species. He recognises that most of the challenges around sustainable agriculture are pre-competitive and is a strong advocate for working in collaboration with other like-minded organisations to drive sustainable change.
