Dairy sector launches consultation on guidance for new greenhouse gas reporting standard

New guidance to support implementation of the GHG Protocol’s Land Sector and Removals Standard
Dairy organisations from across the value chain have opened a public consultation on new guidance designed to help the sector implement the Greenhouse Gas Protocol’s Land Sector and Removals Standard (LSRS).
The guidance has been developed through a collaboration between SAI Platform and the Global Dairy Platform involving multiple dairy processors, cooperatives and buyers. It aims to provide a consistent approach for accounting and reporting greenhouse gas emissions and removals linked to land use within dairy supply chains.
The consultation, coordinated by the International Dairy Federation (IDF), is open for four weeks. SAI Platform is encouraging its members and other stakeholders to review the document and contribute feedback. Industry input will help ensure the guidance is practical, credible and relevant for dairy businesses operating across different regions and production systems.
The consultation marks an important step for the dairy sector as companies prepare to implement the LSRS. Released by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the standard establishes requirements for reporting emissions and removals associated with land management, land-use change, biogenic products and carbon removals. While it provides a global framework, it does not include sector-specific guidance, creating a need for industries that depend on land-based production to develop practical approaches for implementation.
For the dairy sector, a common methodology presents an opportunity to improve consistency across companies and regions. By aligning approaches to accounting and reporting land-based emissions and removals, the guidance can help support more robust reporting, reduce inconsistencies between methodologies, and improve how companies understand and communicate the impact of their supply chains.
Following the consultation process, the guidance is expected to become part of the IDF’s catalogue of guidance for the global dairy sector.
