Release of “Beyond the Farmgate” provides practical tools to strengthen on-farm sustainability efforts

Beyond the Farmgate is a new farmer training and communication programme

SAI Platform has launched Beyond the Farmgate, a new farmer training and communication programme designed to simplify sustainability engagement across crop, beef and dairy value chains. The initiative responds to a growing challenge for producers, who are often expected to navigate multiple sustainability frameworks, reporting requirements and messages without clear guidance on practical next steps.
The programme will create a harmonised, farmer-focused approach that connects sustainability with farm resilience, competitiveness and long-term viability. Built around a simple “why, how, now” learning framework, it aims to help farmers understand why sustainability matters, how it can be applied in practice, and what realistic actions can be taken within their own farming context.
Over the coming months, the project will bring together SAI Platform members, technical experts and farmer representatives to map existing approaches, identify alignment opportunities and co-design training materials. The programme will then be tested through pilot workshops with farmers across Europe, ensuring that the content remains practical, relevant and grounded in real-world farming challenges.
The final package will include cross-sector and sector-specific training modules, facilitator guides, farmer handouts, action-planning tools and a monitoring framework. By creating a shared sustainability narrative and more consistent communication across value chains, Beyond the Farmgate aims to help translate sustainability commitments into measurable action on the ground.
The programme will be delivered in collaboration with consulting partner Nouterra and with the active involvement of interested SAI Platform members. Members who would like to contribute to interviews, workshops, pilot activities or the broader development of the programme are warmly encouraged to get involved.
