William Huet, Director of Agriculture

We are pleased to welcome Cristal Union as a member of SAI Platform. Headquartered in France and founded in 2000, Cristal Union is a farmer-owned cooperative group. It brings together around 9,000 growers, 2,000 employees at 14 industrial sites producing sugar, alcohol and bioethanol, and animal feed from sugar beet and alfafa.

As a major player in the European market, Cristal Union plays a central role in the sugar beet value chain, combining excellence in agricultural production with efficient and responsible industrial processing, both geared towards the challenges of tomorrow. Its cooperative model ensures strong links to farmers and a high level of traceability, supported by farm-level data collection and a long-standing commitment to sustainable agricultural practices.

Sustainability is a key issue for Cristal Union having invested for many years in programmes that have already helped to reduce the group’s global greenhouse gas emissions by 16,7% between 2019 and 2025 across Scopes 1,2 and 3. The group has set ambitious goals for the coming years, with a Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated commitment to reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions by 27.5% by 2030 (vs 2019). Through its “Cristal Vision” programme, the cooperative is driving soil protection, decarbonisation and continuous improvement of practices across its farmer network. “Cristal Vision” is closely aligned with the Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA), with 100 % of growers certified Gold or Silver level.

By joining SAI Platform, Cristal Union brings its strong experience in implementing sustainable practices across large farmer networks, as well as a data-driven approach to benchmarking and continuous improvement. Already involved in the FSA and the Regenerating Together (RT) Programme, the cooperative is well-placed to contribute to collective learning and help accelerate the widespread adoption of regenerative agriculture.
