Doñana Berry Sustainability
Overview
The Doñana Berry Sustainability Project promotes sustainable berry production in the agricultural zone surrounding the Doñana Wetlands of Spain, an area of amazing biodiversity at risk of drying up.
The challenge
Tourism, industrial use and agricultural irrigation, among other factors, have placed the Doñana Wetlands at considerable risk of drying up.
Crop production, the Doñana Wetlands (one of Europe’s most important ecological systems), and the livelihoods of an estimated 200,000 people are all under threat.
Sectoral change in berry production (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries,) and improvements in water management practices will help preserve the Doñana Wetlands.

- Empowering local farmers by providing best practice training with local experts via Ferdoñana
- Increasing the optimisation of water management by farmers
- Demonstrating the effectiveness of SAI Platform’s pre-competitive, knowledge sharing model.
