SAI Platform is delighted to announce that Simpsons Malt Ltd, a UK-based, family-owned malting and agricultural merchanting company, has been awarded the prestigious 2024 FSA Growing a Better Planet Award. Recognised for its leadership in promoting sustainability and resilience across supply chains, Simpsons Malt works closely with over 750 cereal producers throughout the UK, leveraging the FSA to drive sustainable farming practices and innovative on-farm technologies.

Simpsons Malt’s award submission underscores the vital role of collaboration in advancing sustainability within agricultural supply chains. Each of their Farm Management Groups have achieved over 90% FSA Gold Performance level for barley production, and they are now partnering with their growers to replicate this success in wheat production.

In response to winning the award, Ben Gothorp, Sustainability Manager at Simpsons Malt, said, “We are absolutely delighted to have won the FSA Growing A Better Planet Award, highlighting our commitment to driving sustainability throughout the malting barley and distilling wheat supply chains which, in turn, helps us—and our distilling partners—tackle our Scope 3 emissions.”

“One of our overarching company objectives is to achieve carbon-neutral malting barley and distilling wheat production by 2030, and we’re pleased that this global award recognises the positive steps we are making towards this.”

This year’s judging panel included Andrew Utterback, Director for Global Sustainable Sourcing at Ingredion, Rozanne Davis, ERBS Director at SAI Platform, and Tione Malizani, Extension Officer at Phata Sugarcane Outgrowers, the 2023 award recipients. Each entry was evaluated based on its objectives, implementation strategies, collaboration efforts, and the impact they have had on social, environmental, and business performance.

“I loved seeing how [Simpsons Malt] are utilising the FSA to quickly gauge how their farmers are performing but more importantly they are using the continuous improvement plan as a lever to work towards positive, measurable environmental impact.”
